Previously in times of heavy rainfall untreated sewage would be discharged into the Thames from multiple outflows, and this week for the first time the new super sewer was used to avoid these discharges. Construction was carried at over 20 sites mainly along the river, the main tunnel running from Acton in the west to Abbey Mills in the east to join the Lea tunnel and then on to Beckton sewage treatment works.
I have been covering the construction of this project over 6 years and it has been one of most interesting projects that I have undertaken. From deep underground to up in the air capturing images and showing the tunnels which are actually rather beautiful, to new public realm spaces along the river.
